Charles Rhine

Charles Rhine was born on 11 March 1836 in Germany and came to the United States in 1856.  He settled in Contra Costa County, and helped establish an new town at the base of Mount Diablo. In 1857, early Clayton settlers, Charles Rhine and Joel Clayton came to a gentleman’s agreement between them. Both wanted to name the town and neither was willing to duel for the honor. So, they tossed a coin for the naming rights of this new township in Contra Costa County. Joel Clayton won.

In 1868, Charles married Cecilia Lobree.

Charles, and his brother Jacob, were both successful businessmen in Clayton, and Charles was appointed Postmaster in 1889. In 1907, he was appointed as a Contra Costa County Supervisor by Governor Gillett.

Rhine died on 23 May 1922 in San Francisco.
