Wm. J. Buchanan Of Contra Costa County Succumbs
PITTSBURG (UP) William J. Buchanan, 83, recently called Mr. Contra Costa County by Gov. Earl Warren, died in Community hospital here today following a week’s illness.
Buchanan, chairman of the Contra Costa county board of Supervisors and oldest elected officer in the state both in years of service and age, had been critically ill since Sept. 29 when he was stricken with a heart attack at a special meeting of the board.
He had served on the county board of supervisors since 1904 and had been' chairman of the board for 30 years. He was a past president of the California Supervisors association.
Buchanan was born at New York Landing, the present site of the city of Pittsburg, and attended schools in Nortonville, now a ghost town but once a California mining center.
