DEATH OF HENRY COWELL IN SAN FRANCISCO

Henry Cowell died Tuesday morning at his home in San Francisco. Ever since he was shot in the shoulder, on his ranch in Merced Co. last March, he was in failing health, owing to the shock and loss of blood. Mr. Cowell was among the financial giants of the State. He was born in New England, coming to California in early days. When a young man he was a contractor in the Southern States. He purchased A. P. Jordan’s interest in the lime kilns. The business was carried on for many years under the firm name of Davis & Cowell. After Mr. Davis’ death Mr. Cowell became the sole owner. In recent years the business was conducted by the Henry Cowell Co. Mr. Cowell owned 14,000 acres of land in the county. He was a taxpayer in twelve counties, carrying on the business of farming, dairying, grain growing, hop growing, fruit growing and cattle raising. He also owned much, property in San Francisco and Stockton. For twelve years, Mr. Cowell and his family resided on his ranch near the kilns, moving to San Francisco in 1879. He leaves two sons, Harry and Ernest, and two daughters.
